Tilt Wall Construction

If you happen to drive by one of AMC's current job sites, you may notice a sky scraping crane hoisting massive concrete panels through the air.  What's going on?

Even more surprising is that a pile of concrete panels suddenly became a building shell virtually overnight!

You would be witnessing the innovative "tilt wall" construction method where commercial buildings can be erected in a short period of time, safely, with tremendous cost benefits.  Tilt wall is relatively popular in southern states such as Florida, Texas and California where the weather conditions are more conducive to such construction.

The walls of a tilt wall building are created horizontally in large concrete slabs.  These concrete slabs, or panels, are then lifted by crane, or "tilted up", into their rightful position around the building slab.

The panels are braced into position until the other structural components of the building are secured into position.

Once all panels are erected, the building shell is virtually complete.

Modern tilt wall construction is not new.  In fact the method was first used in America circa 1905. Early erection was done using tilt tables, but the development of the mobile crane and truck mixers allowed the growth of tilt up construction. Tilt wall gained widespread popularity in the post World War II construction boom.

Early tilt wall projects were minimalistic and boxy, to say the least.  Today, improved techniques offer more choices to increase visual appeal.  For instance, the finishes range from paint, stain and pigmented concrete, to cast-in features such as brick and stone, and to erosion finishes such as sandblasting and acid-etching.

Shapes have been enhanced as well, including circular or elliptical openings, curved panel tops and facades.
